    Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on 31 October 1875 in Nadiad, a village in Gujarat. His father, Jhaverbhai Patel, was a farmer and served in the army of the Rani of Jhansi, while his mother, Ladbai, was a deeply religious and hardworking woman. Patel grew up with strong values of discipline, courage, and honesty.

    Despite limited resources, Patel was determined to study. He completed his schooling in Karamsad and Nadiad and later pursued law.     In 1910, Patel travelled to England to study law at the Middle Temple. He excelled in his examinations and returned to India with a renewed passion to work for society. Though he had the potential for a wealthy career, he chose to dedicate his life to India’s freedom struggle.

Entry into Freedom Movement and Role in National Activities

    Sardar Patel’s entry into the Indian freedom movement began when he heard Mahatma Gandhi speak about justice and non-violence. Deeply inspired, he joined the Indian National Congress and started participating in local struggles for the rights of peasants and farmers.

Kheda Satyagraha (1918)

    Gandhi asked Patel to lead the movement when the farmers of Kheda were unable to pay taxes due to famine. Through negotiations, strategic planning, and tireless organizing, Patel succeeded in securing tax relief. This victory made him a national leader.

Bardoli Satyagraha (1928)

    This was the turning point in Patel’s life. The British government unfairly raised land taxes in Bardoli taluka. Patel mobilized thousands of farmers, inspiring them to stand united without fear. The movement ended with a great victory, earning Patel the title “Sardar”, meaning “leader” or “chief,” from the people.

Quit India Movement (1942)

    During the Quit India Movement, Patel delivered powerful speeches calling for the British to leave India immediately. His leadership led to mass participation across Gujarat. He was arrested and jailed, but his influence inspired millions.
